Mr. Edward Payton Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Deacon Charles Edward Payton, known to some as “Pete” or “Ed” was born August 9, 1927 to the late Rosie Bell Carr Payton and Curtis Payton in Tylertown, MS. He attended Forrest School and completed 8th grade. He was a hard worker and begin his work career at the Box Factory then Bill Brent’s Saw Mill and finally retired at Eisworth Motors in McComb, MS as a mechanic after approximately 29 years of service. Of course, he was also well known as a mechanic in the community in which he had his own shop at home. He viewed working on vehicles as a challenge and was always willing to accept the task. He entered into holy matrimony to Norma Ruth Bullock on May 22, 1948. To that union five (5) children were born: Charles E. Payton, Ora K. Smith, Dorothy L. Crump, Emogene Billups and Janet Jenkins. He was an active member of Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Tylertown, MS until his health felled. At the church, he served faithfully in the following capacities: Deacon, Senior Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Financial Secretary. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Leslie Bullock, mother-in-law Emma Bullock, step-mother-in-law Jimmie Bullock, one brother, Edison Lewel Payton; two sisters Leola Payton Downs and Lola Mae Payton Jenkins; son-in-law Joe Crump; three brother-in-laws; Booker T. McKelphin, Ellis Jenkins, and Eugene Downs. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Norma Ruth; four (4) daughters: Ora K. Smith of Tylertown, MS, Dorothy L. Crump and Emogene (Tommy) Billups of Jackson, MS, Janet (Floyd) Jenkins of Ruth, MS (3) sons: Charles E. of McComb, MS, Jermaine Jenkins of Gulfport, MS and Kelvin Jenkins of Jayess, MS; one sister Edna McKelphin of Chicago, IL one brother Matthew (Rosie) Payton of Chicago, IL; two sister-in-laws Gwendolyn Payton of Chicago, IL and Lurene Matthews of Tylertown, MS, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
